Amy
Schumaker Bliss is a musician based in the Philadelphia area. Originally from Ohio, she attended
Capital University Conservatory of Music in Columbus, Ohio. While a sophomore at the school, she won the conservatory-wide concerto competition. She earned degrees in euphonium performance under the guidance of Dr. Thomas Zugger and
music education under Professor James Swearingen. After graduation, she moved to England to study. In one
year, she earned her master’s degree at the Royal Northern College of
Music (RNCM). She achieved the level of Honors with Distinction in performance while studying under Steven Mead and David Thornton. While in England, she performed in the RNCM Orchestra and various concert bands including the RNCM's Wind Ensemble, chosen to perform in the BBC Proms at The Royal Albert Hall in London. She played solo euphonium with Besses o'th' Barn brass band and had performance and rehearsal opportunities with many other brass bands in the area.
Now that she's back in the United States, Amy has combined music education and performance into a career that's just right for her. She started fall of 2012 as Professor of Euphonium at Rowan University where she also teaches euphonium in the Rowan Prep program. She is Senior Adjunct Professor of Music at Burlington County College where she teaches music history. She also enjoys teaching private lessons and maintained a studio of about 20 piano and brass students at SoundStage School of Music. She has recently left her position at Soundstage to make time in her schedule to pursue a Doctor of Musical Arts in euphonium performance this fall at Rutgers University's Mason Gross School School of the Arts.
As a performer, Amy has over 60 hours of recording experience including performing in the accompaniment on Grammy-submitted Heros and Legends by Boston Brass. Her performance projects include playing solo euphonium for the Atlantic Brass Band (North American Brass Band Champions, 2011 and 2012) and collaborating with area musicians for brass quintet, orchestral, wind band, solo, and low brass performances. Amy lives with her husband Adam and her guinea pig Percy just outside of Philadelphia in Collingswood, New Jersey.
